Firstly I would like to wish all my friends and customers a very happy 2009.
I have not updated the blog for a while and have been laid low with a bad migraine; annoyingly I have had a few bad headaches lately but this was a whopper and it has forced me to rethink my workload to keep stress to a minimum. This is a big O birthday year for me and I need to be aware of my limitations.I don't want another ruptured aneurysm. Some things obviously I can not change so I am trying to work on the ones I can.
One of these is by limiting the things that take longer or cause more stress, and spending more time with my grandsons and on the things I really find relaxing and fun. The other is to go with my own feelings, and do what I think is best for me at the time, even if it is different from the norm.
I have decided to take Possum Pouches back to how I originally intended it; that is providing cloth nappies and knitted covers at an affordable price.
I have already made a start by releasing the intro to cloth packs at the Ceejay site
These are a very affordable option to allow people to try cloth without it costing the earth. They come in Small size. I may offer a medium size later but will not go any larger for packs.I will also look at offering the budget nappies singly, but not just yet and the pack is really the better option. I say "may" because I might win lotto and be able to retire but as Mr Rudd didn't do the right thing by my age group I certainly can't retire yet.
To cater for other buyers I have decided to continue offering the low priced soakers that I recently offered on Ozebaby. So for the time being soakers will remain at only $20 (plus postage which is $4.20 for one or 2) and shorts at $25.I keep postage to the bare minimum but can not absorb it at these low prices. These are our regular Colours of Australia soakers in quality pure wool, all hand knitted .
Now to KKs. These are arguably still the best night AIO( there is also a pocket -have you seen it?).I constantly see people saying "I have tried everything and nothing works" - often they have only tried 2 or 3 many of which are not designed for night use. Thus to allow people to try a great night AIO I am keeping the last of the current stock ( mainly size large) at just $25 plus postage ( normally $5.40 for 1)
These will contain the long bamboo booster with which I decided I was not 100% happy - it works just fine- but I don't like the turned version as it is hard to sew neatly; so now I have an industrial overlocker I will probably go back to overlocked boosters.
However the $25 remaining KKs will all come with the turned bamboo booster.
If and when I make new KKs the price may be reviewed but my aim is to make cloth nappying, both day and night, an affordable option whilst I am still able.
Embroidery? Maybe. Machine embroidery, as well as being time consuming, uses thousands of tiny stitches which weakens the fabric, and embroidery thread is not designed for frequent washing. Therefore I do not believe it is practical for workhorse nappies, but is lovely for a special one; so I may do one for OOAK listings.
Both the Possum Pouches site and the Ceejay site will have info on KKs and Knits; occasionally items will appear on our Ozebaby store and jewellery and assorted items will be kept to our Minicuteture store.(Watch for more soon at MC)
The Gossamer Dreams store will open again for its one day per month special listings on 15th January.
Links to all sites are on the right side of this blog.
I am always available by email and will always try my hardest to help everyone in the shortest possible time frame for the lowest possible cost. Whilst I try to answer quickly sometimes circumstances prevent it ( like this week), but during the week replies should be forthcoming within 24 hours; weekends I may be slower. Making changes to the websites, editing and adding photos etc takes a lot of time so if you can't find something on the site/s please email and ask.
Knits I will always accept orders for; sewing will usually depend on other commitments.

Intro to cloth packs-Preorders
Later today I will be putting up pre-orders for the Intro to Cloth packs. These will be on the Ceejay site for the time being but may move to my main site later
It has been my observation that one of the reasons people don't go to cloth is because they believe it is expensive. Yes it can be; if all that is available is highly priced and decorated nappies. To start off babies need basic nappies that they can wee in, and when small, bubs are (or probably should be) changed frequently.
When I first started making nappies quite a few years ago there were only about 3 nappy makers in Australia, if that. Prices were good, products were good, service was good.
Times have changed, the market has been flooded with cloth nappies, some good, some not so good, but a lot is highly priced; also people are confused. It was never my intention to make nappies for profit; my primary aim was to get the message across that cloth not only was better but also was heaps cheaper.
I have decided to supply a good basic nappy pack, which could be given as a gift to new mums or used to supplement a small stash already acquired by a cloth user, and to make it affordable.
Packs will be by pre-order only. They take some time to make so there will be a slight waiting time, depending on how many are on the list, but probably 2 to 4 weeks. Packs contain 6 fitted nappies (with cotton outers which could be flannel, knits, fine corduroy, quilters cotton etc, bamboo or BKT soakers, velour, or sherpa or similar inners, hook and loop closures); 6 bamboo snap in boosters; 1 Little Jakes hand knitted soaker in pure wool, including hand dyed wools in our Colours of Australia theme,6 Cloth Wipes plus a drawstring PUL wetbag. The nappy is a modification of my original ceejay pattern, but is not one sized and does not have the fold over front; also the fabrics have been brought up to date to include bamboo.
Details will be on the Ceejay site, with price.
Yes the price is low
BUT the quality is not.
I have kept the price to the bare minimum to allow everyone to have a chance to try cloth. How long these packs remain at the special intro price is not known.
The fine print: These packs will NOT be customisable. Packs will be supplied in random colours-my choice. You will have the option to say boy, girl or unisex, but not to choose actual colours or fabrics, or alter the packs. They do not come gift wrapped, but will be packed the most economical way as this special introductory price will include regular postage within Australia.
I will offer slots for a particular date, and once full, the next slots will be for a later date. I will try to keep a space in case someone wants a gift in a hurry but these packs are very time consuming to put together on my own, so it is unlikely I can do them in under 2 weeks-unless of course I am bribed with something yummy.
Lindt orange or pistachio chocolate bars might work.
Nappies are classed as size small-they are not newborn size.(If you want a newborn gift pack I highly recommend Cherubs Kiss). However it won't take long for most bubs to fit into them and the length of time they will fit obviously depends on the individual child, but approx 8 or 9 kg.
By that time mums will be looking at night nappies so it is possible I will be offering larger size packs in different varieties, but that is uncertain at this time.
I am currently taking a break from sewing KK's but as I made such an enormous batch of them in September I do still have enough if you would like one; keep an eye open for some heavily reduced ones too, on the AIO page at my possumpouches.com.au site.
Knits are mostly made to order although I have a few soakers and longies in stock.

Quick Christmas Gifts & KK Limited Specials from $20
Coming to our Minicuteture store just in time for Christmas are some inexpensive pretty beaded gifts, made by my daughter and myself. These include phone/camera dangles, bookmarks and wine glass charms. We have been working very hard on some gorgeous clay jewellery but I am not sure when this will be listed as Christmas is coming so very fast and so many other things take priority. However they will become a regular feature of our Minicuteture store.
The beaded items will be available shortly.
KK SPECIALS: very limited number of KK AIOs from $25; and POCKET KKs from $20.
SOAKERS:Instock soakers for 20% off ($24 instead of $30 and free post) until Christmas but you need to mention a special code word, which you will find in the description of one of the items in our Minicuteture store. Just look for a word that seems out of place in the description, but please don't pass it on; the fun is in finding it for oneself.Instock soakers can be found here

Quick Silly Prices Sale
Sometime this week I am having a brief silly prices sale.It will include stock that has been sitting around for a while which I had forgotten about, with prices starting at $5, plus some current stock of woollies which will be significantly discounted.
I am not sure exactly when it will be but it will be in the middle of one day and the prices will be worth waiting for; I still need to find what I have and organise photos etc, so I can't tell you what will be included until it actually happens. I have been installing a new computer and have not had a chance to organise the photos yet.
Ceejay Intro to Cloth packs are also on the agenda very soon; these will not be of interest to dyed in the wool clothies, but will be ideal for gifts for new mums.
I hope to have the info up on the ceejaynappies site this week as long as everything works on the new computer.

December already?
The year has flown by, especially the last 4 or 5 months.
I have spent a lot of time contemplating the future of PossumPouches as I have a "big" birthday fast approaching.
I decided to venture into some different products to give myself a chance to pursue some of my other interests and add variety to the site/s. Although I have been working hard to get these ready I have had a lot of family things on so am not sure exactly when they will all appear but I hope it will be soon. I am also making a few other changes- more about those later.
Watch this space.

Happy 2nd Birthday Jacob
Little Jacob turned 2 on Sunday. He had a lovely afternoon with a few friends and some relatives. The storm hit Toowoomba that afternoon but didn't spoil it for him; there was enough time to play on trampoline and in the sandpit.
He was a little worn out that night though.
Next weekend-weather permitting he has another celebration, this time at the beach and zoo.
I returned to Brisbane next morning-power had been out since the storm hit there, and remained off for more than 24 hours. We were fortunate to have a lead running from our neighbour's home, as he has a small generator. That helped keep the fridge going and we have always had emergency gas equipment for lights and cooking.
The explosion of the insulators on the power pole was loud and made an incredible mess.
While we didnt have any tree damage we did have a loss of some electrical equipment but others around us were not so lucky and will be feeling the effects for some time to come.I think most people in Brisbane and surrounds were affected in some way by this one.If nothing else it can help make people aware of the need to keep gutters cleared and trim overhanging trees.
Meantime it is back to the everday grind.
A very few Mini soaker keyrings are being given with instock knits until stock(of keyrings) runs out.
The intro to cloth packs will be up and running before the month is over, on the www.ceejaynappies.com.au site

Crikey Set for Steve Irwin Day
15th November is again Steve Irwin Day. Once again I have one special Crikey Set, proceeds to one of Steve's Conservation charities. This one is a bluey green soaker in organic wool and merino, quite thick although wool was sold as 8 ply- it is nearer Aran (10 ply), and there is the option to have Crikey embroidered on the back- or alternatively I will knit a regular crikey soaker (beige with green lettering). It comes with a teeny mini soaker keyring, and these will be given with all instock soakers sold between now and Christmas. The nappy is a large size night/day fitted, quilters cotton outer with croc design, bamboo velour inner and concealed full layer of lightweight bamboo and one of double napped flannel, plus soaker of BKT. Booster is snap in bamboo which can be folded to give absorbency where most needed. This set is normally over $60 but is a special price for one day only on the Gossamer Dreams store November listing on 15th.
I am spending the weekend with my grandons, Jacob turns 2 on Sunday.
I hope to start listing the budget nappies after all the celebrations are completed- we are also taking off to the beach and Australia Zoo in a few days time.

Budget Nappy site opening
Sometime this month I will be relaunching the Ceejay Nappy site where I will be offering our budget nappy options
The first pack will be aimed at people who are interested in trying cloth but know very little about it. This would be an ideal package to give as a gift to someone having a new baby. Nappy is a revamped ceejay, but is a sized version and will come in a variety of basic fabrics (including bamboo)and wool.
I am running a little late with these as I have had such a frantically busy couple of months.
More info will be available very soon.

October
I saw a comment about KKs being very hard to get as they usually were never in stock and how there are plenty sitting on the site at the moment.
I need to correct that.
KKs have never been hard to get. I have always clearly stated that people could get one at any time, just email and I would make it.For the first three quarters of the year I sold only by orders and made them up quite quickly. They were/are probably the easiest of the Aussie wahm made nappies to get hold of.
However while I was away supposedly on holidays I made up a huge batch, the caravan annexe was chockers; my intention being to have enough stock to last till the end of the year so I could have a break from sewing to catch up on other things.
They were just as easy to get all year as they are at the moment.
Supplies now are dwindling fast and there are not plenty left in stock ; medium longs are almost sold out and large are also getting very low; most of those pictured have only one each, just a couple have more than one of the colour.
I had a problem with the new booster; I have emailed a lot of people but if you have had trouble with your possums tail booster please email me possumpouches@optusnet.com.au so I can help rectify the problem.
If stock runs out before Christmas I am not sure if I will have time to make more- I will play that by ear; however a couple of other things are in the pipeline once I catch up on the mass of paperwork which continues to smother me.

Must watch TV

On Tuesday night please tune into ABC1 (check local guide for correct time in your state)
Hugh Jackman narrates this documentary about Indonesia's "Burning Season".
Every year, deliberately lit fires rage across Indonesia. They destroy pristine rainforest, endanger orangutans and contribute to climate change. A young carbon trading entrepreneur goes in search of a solution.
"Every year, there is one outstanding documentary that you cannot miss, that people will talk about because of its significance to the planet's future. This coming year, The Burning Season is that documentary." - Hugh Jackman

Extended discount finishes soon

The extended discount for KK's ends on 8th so now is a good time to grab one.
I am not making any more KKs this year so once stock is exhausted they will not be available until after Christmas.
Knits will continue to be made to order as always- soakers, shorts, longies, skirts, setc and combinations.
I hope to have some stock at the Reusable Nappy Week expo in Brisbane on 18th Oct.

Last of specials and discounts
Today is the last day of the one-off specials; I will be listing the leftover wool and suedecloth later today; also there is still a little hemp terry left.
I have extended the KK discount until 8th October to compensate for being away and not having them available at the start of the hunt; also the Possum and Wombat Pouches (pockets) are late being finished so these will also be discounted for that time; I am desperately trying to get their "stuffers" finished to list them tomorrow.

Current special
There is just a little bit of wool left on the specials page, from today's listing. It is 12 ply and works out at around $2 a ball for good quality wool. It will not be there much longer.
The minkee pul on Thursday went very quickly- more fabric to come, but this is not big quantities of any one colour;however there are some great bargains for home sewers and the fabric will all be really cheap, but good quality. If any home sewers are looking for small pieces of various nappy fabrics for home use only, you are welcome to email me and if I am planning to list what you want I am happy to help.

Super Specials
Today is the start of our superspecials, until the end of the hunt.
At either 10am or 2pm each day I will list,on the SPECIALS page of the possum pouches site, a super special-really low priced.
It will remain there for 24 hours or until sold out;after that if any remains it will be moved to a regular part of the site, for a regular price.
No other discounts will apply, so these items will not be included in the hunt discount as they will already be rock bottom prices.
Most of it will be fabric, and a bit of wool, with maybe an occasional soaker or nappy item. The purpose is to keep DH happy by clearing out the enormous stash of materials which has taken over our house.
Fabrics will be ideal for mums trying to sew a few items for their own bub or for a friend's child-but please don't onsell the raw materials to make a profit.

Back to work
After a big weekend with family, on Tuesday I started back in my "normal routine".
It has been a big 2 months- first our trip to North Qld, then almost straight away we were off in the caravan to the back of beyond where there was no internet, poor phone coverage, sandflies , and just a few fish for DH to catch.I spent the whole time sewing in the van. There were no shops nearby, in fact no shops at all for over 40km.
When I started going through emails after my return I had thousands. Normally on holidays I check every few days; this time I simply couldn't and boy did they mount up.
I have not had time to look for icons, or even to look what was on sale during the hunt as I spent every moment between trips packing and unpacking and preparing sewing. The poor truck got overheated on the trip north due to the huge weight of bamboo fabric and machines.
DH was horrified when he saw how I spent 20 hours out of every 24 and has laid down the law.
Consequently I need to stop overflowing into almost every room in the house (plus the verandah) and minimise my workload.
Therefore I am spending only an hour a day online, weekdays only.
Also I am having a HUGE cull of fabrics/notions which I don't use, to try to make some space.
I am running some fast specials, (more info in next post), but these will be really cheap items, listed daily until the end of the hunt or perhaps a week or so longer.

KK AIOs available
KK AIOs will start being listed today-pockets will not be available until next week.
However I have a family commitment from Thursday to Monday inclusive so will not be able to send orders until mid next week.
Also because my cart is a manual one and I have to remove sold items, it is possible something may sell twice before I have a chance to remove it or mark it sold. For this reason it may be a good idea to give a second colour choice; otherwise I will let you know by email what colours I still have.
Yes I could have an automated cart setup, but I prefer the personal touch of dealing with each customer by email; also it is an added expense and I am reluctant to have to raise prices at the moment. I am in this to help people so don't like robotic systems as they are not personalised enough.
I am extending the discount for registered hunters into October to compensate for the late listing, but will not be doing any custom KKs between now and the end of the year (Knit orders will continue to be accepted). I have quite a bit of KK stock but will mark limited colours as such.
I would like to thank everyone for their patience in what has been a very difficult couple of months. I am looking forward to slowing down between now and Christmas but will be happy to accept knitting orders at any time.

Home again

We are now home after our caravan trip-which was a nice fishing holiday for DH( and he caught a few) but I worked non stop the whole time and now need a holiday to recover.
KKs will start going up from sometime on Tuesday 16th but as my 2 hands just will not do the work of 20 I am really flat strap trying to get them up so if the colour you want is not showing, please check back later as it is going to take me some time to take/load/edit/post pics and I am still trying to snap wings and finish boosters.
Because I missed the first 2 weeks I have decided I will extend the discount ( for nappies only) past the end of the month, to compensate.
However-this will be the last big batch of KKs for this year. I have never liked doing large stockings and have almost killed myself trying to finish these. For that reason I am not sewing any more KKs for the rest of the year. Orders will be filled from this current stock until it runs out.Hopefully I have enough to last until Christmas for anyone placing an order.
After Christmas I will resume making to order as I have been doing in the past.
I need time to catch up on all the things that I have not had time to do for months.
Knits will continue to be made to order.
I hope everyone is enjoying the hunt.
Gossamer Dreams stocks tonight.I have the pictured set listed.

And the hunt begins
This will be my last post before the hunt starts as I am away from early Saturday. As explained in previous posts and on the site, knits will be available all month with discount to hunters starting 9am Monday and orders will be answered by Frances.
Nappies will not be available until 16th when I return; this can't be helped unfortunately, but stock will be available then.
No clues for first few days- icon is too easy to find.If people are having trouble finding it,which is highly unlikely, I will add a clue to the home page later in the week.
Hope everyone enjoys the hunt and does not get as stressed as I have rushing to set everything up for whilst I am away!!

Nappy Hunt Month
The next nappy hunt is just over a week away. If you have not already registered to be a hunter please do so, as you need to be a registered hunter with a code to receive discounts
http://www.diaperdecisions.com/pages/gcdhreg.php
Unfortunately I will be away for the first half of the hunt so this is how Possum Pouches will be involved.
Firstly the icon will be extremely easy to find, no weird puzzles or difficult clues; it will be easily found right there on a page which you should be able to find quite quickly from the menu; if it becomes necessary I will add a clue on the home page after the first few days.
KNITS.All instock knits will have 10% off for the whole month or until sold; knits can also be ordered throughout the month, and the discount on orders will be 5%, but discounted orders will only be accepted for the number of items which can be completed by mid October; after that normal prices will apply. However with both of us knitting quite fast it is hoped all September hunt orders can be finished within that time frame.Frances will be looking after all knit enquiries and orders whilst I am away; please order via the website as other email addresses may not be checked until my return.
KK NAPPIES These will not be available until the second half of the hunt.I will not be here to receive orders and Frances will not have any nappy stock.
A discount of 10% will apply to all AIO and Pocket Instocks only from 16th of Sept till the end of the hunt. Orders for KKs will not be able to be accepted during the hunt period. There should be good instocks of KK AIOs and some Pocket instocks available on 16th.
Discount applies to products only; normal postage will apply and be advised by email on receipt of orders. I keep postage to the absolute minimum but due to rising costs it has become impossible to continue giving discounted postal rates.
The website operates on a manual system. You do not receive automatically generated replies from a robot; instead you get an individual reply from either Frances or me, usually within 24 hours.
As we write each reply as a personal response please do not quote anything we have said in that email to others, either verbally, by email or in forums.
Also our photos are copyright; please do not use them in forums or on blogs without our permission.
Sold items also have to be manually removed, so it is sometimes possible to oversell before the items can be marked as sold; if you have a second colour choice please add it to the comments box, otherwise we will advise what alternatives are available.
You must be a registered hunter to receive discounts and the code must be entered into the comments box- the discount will be applied and advised in our return email.
We hope everyone enjoys this hunt; it is a lot of work for sponsors and a huge effort for the organisers but should be great fun for all.

Home again
Have not had much time to update blog- have been enjoying a brief holiday in beautiful Cairns. Last time I was there was 1995, just before the SkyRail opened, so was pleased to be able to enjoy that ride to Kuranda, and back on the train. If I had to name the one best thing it would be the DOME. This is a large free flight aviary on top of the Casino, quite a few bird species and some lovely little furry people; black cockatoos who put a hole in the balls of DH's silver slave bangle, and removed buttons from the top of people's caps in a couple of seconds. They love attention and it was most enjoyable.
Now it is time to get back to reality, and with the nappy hunt coming up in September I am getting a few things ready for that busy month. Unfortunately it clashes with our caravan trip, but I have worked out a way around that; more info nearer to the end of the month here or on newsletter

My backpack
I needed a bag or backpack for my upcoming holiday and decided to make a patchwork and quilted one. This is the Jinny Beyer Backpack pattern, but I was using patchwork fabric from my enormous stash so did not have to buy any thing at all to make it. We quilters know to never throw anything away!!This is a hurriedly taken pic.

The skirt is from a pattern by SheepyTimeKnits under a special Cottage Industry Licence; the nappy is our own KK. A boys( or girls) longies set will also be listed shortly. Keep your eyes peeled

Additional thickness in knitted Soakers and Longies?

I didn't realise how much time had flown by since I last wrote here. Not enough hours in my day that's for sure; and now tax time is again upon us. Oh joy!
Have been knitting up a storm at night and sewing KKs by day, there is dust all over the furniture; I will get to it one day.
Because both Frances ( my knitter) and I have always felt wool thicker than 8 ply is too thick for little ones we have created a wool booster, hand knitted in a special thick stitch that can be attached to our longies and soakers using the drawstring of the soaker. This gives extra thickness where it is needed for very heavy wetters and when the soaker has to be dried it can be raised out of the soaker for faster drying than thick wools. Mind you 8 ply is plenty thick enough for soakers in most cases, but sometimes people like the reassurance.
It can also be used in situations where an AIO is worn under clothing and it again gives a little extra protection. It can be tied on with a drawstring or used without as a lay in wool booster. There are lots of other options for it which is why we call it our multi-use booster. The special weave of the stitch keeps it nice and flat, but it is slower to knit than people would think; it is not just a rectangle knitted up in a short time. Pics soon

The store goes live
Gossamer Dreams Store is previewing now and items go on sale tonight at 8pm for just 24 hours. Many items are already there, others will be listed during the day but you need to register now so you can buy once the items are available tonight.
Fot this first listing we have on offer some "Gossamer Possum Packs".
These contain either 2 KKs or a Longies and fitted bamboo KK, plus bonus drawstring wetbag and regular postage is free. At the very special opening price of $55 these are a bargain and will probably never be repeated at that price.
In the KK packs some have a Malden Mills fabric trimmed KK AIO plus a minkee AIO.Another pack has an appliqued MM AIO and a fabric trimmed daytime AIO. That particular nappy (lighthouse) has the fabric trim reaching the waistband; in the other packs the fabric does not go right to the waistband edges. TheKKnitted and fitted packs have gorgeous longies plus a bamboo nappy with cotton outer, bamboo velour inner and concealed full layers of both bamboo fleece and double napped flannel, and concealed soaker of 2 BKT and 1 bamboo.
For all KKs we have brought back the revampedPossum's Tail booster- long instead of trifold, turned instead of overlocked, and having several options for folding to give absorbency where most required.

Stores
Launch of the Gossamer Dreams online store is set for 15th June, and 15th each month thereafter. 5 stores will stock special items with a different theme each month, June's theme being water.
As we had decided to call the store GossamerDreams , we at Possum Pouches and Cherubs Kiss have closed the Ozebaby GD store and reopened our individual stores- our 2 stores were part of Ozebaby on the day it originally opened, we are store numbers 5 and 6, and it is nice to see the names back on the list.
I plan to list OOAKs on the OB store , and something special each month on the GD store site. Items on both these stores will be sold from instock only.
Regular instocks will be available from the Possum Pouches store and KKs/ Keester Kovers® and knits will always be available by contacting me via email from the PP website.
